This soaring high-rise building of 14 floors was completed in 1919. It was designed by the architect firm Smith, Hinchman & Grylls. ...“vertical lines sweep from sidewalk to sky, as a highly sculptural facade creates a rich interplay of light, shade and shadow.” (p. 64, American Institute of Architects Guide to Detroit Architecture, (c) 2003, Wayne State University)
Originally built for Richard Henry Fyfe, a Detroit merchant who earned his fortune as a shoe merchant in the late 19th century, it was an introduction of Gothic style to the Detroit skyline.
