History of the Fyfe Building

This soaring high-rise building of 14 floors was completed in 1919. It was designed by the architect firm Smith, Hinchman & Grylls. ...“vertical lines sweep from sidewalk to sky, as a highly sculptural facade creates a rich interplay of light, shade and shadow.” (p. 64, American Institute of Architects Guide to Detroit Architecture, (c) 2003, Wayne State University)

Originally built for Richard Henry Fyfe, a Detroit merchant who earned his fortune as a shoe merchant in the late 19th century, it was an introduction of Gothic style to the Detroit skyline.

Did you know?

On November 11, 1918, now known as Armistice Day, when the city of Detroit was celebrating the end of the war, an airplane was circling above the still unfinished Fyfe Building. It hit a flagpole atop the building and crashed through a house at Witherall and Montcalm. It was the only tragedy during the outpouring of joy about the end of World War I.
